GET AN EXAM BY YOUR OWN DOCTOR!

Social Security will often send claimants who are trying to get disability benefits for a medical exam.  They will usually send you to a doctor you have never seen before, which is to your disadvantage.  Did you know that you are entitled to be examined by your own doctor?

Rather than going to a doctor who has never seen you before for this "consultative exam," why not go to your own doctor?

Social Security's published position is that the claimant's own doctor is the preferred source for medical information because he or she is in the best position to know the claimant's medical history and limitations (20 Code of Federal Regulations  404.1527).

Even though that is Social Security's policy, you will be hard pressed to get them to schedule a consultative exam with your doctor.  However, if you insist, you are entitled to do so, if some conditions are met:

First, your doctor must be willing to do the exam.

Second, your doctor must be willing to accept the payment offered by Social Security for the exam.  Many doctors charge more than Social Security is willing to pay.
